Individuals’ daily experiences vary significantly based on gender identity and expression. In any data, including from OpenStreetMap (OSM), contributors’ gender influences the information they prioritize. Promoting inclusivity and gender-sensitive projects creates a map that better represents our world and fosters equitable outcomes. Open mapping enables informed, context-appropriate actions by humanitarian, development, and community organizations. HOT’s work on gender equality connects open map data with real-world applications, emphasizing gender equality. By increasing the participation of underrepresented genders and integrating gender-sensitive data, we improve quality of life and create a more representative map, highlighting gender-specific places like maternal healthcare and safe spaces.
