Bio
Ibrahima joins HOT as the Regional Director for the Open Mapping Hub in Western and Northern Africa. In this role, he will lead the team to help nurture, support, and amplify open mapping work in 25 priority countries in the region. He brings a wealth of experience and leadership in campaigning, research, engagement, communication and his knowledge of the economic, political, and socio-cultural context of West Africa will be an asset in advancing the objectives of the regional Open Mapping Hub.
Ibrahima holds a PhD in Food Science (summa cum laude) from the Barcelona Autonomous University (UAB), and two Masters of Sciences in Food sciences (UAB) and in Aquatic Bio-resources Management from Astrakhan State Technical University, (Russian Federation). He is fluent in Wolof, French, Spanish, English and Russian.
He has worked as researcher in CRODT / ISRA, the first Senegalese Research Institute for Agriculture; and specialized in food safety and work in hygiene, quality and technology of food products. He holds more than 20 years of experience in research, teaching and consulting in food safety, in monitoring quality management of seafood industries and working on standards and policy in the fish sector. His work experience also focuses on fisheries management, environment and food security but also on quality management of industries, application of HACCP, GMP, GHP, traceability, Risk Analysis, etc. He worked as an African Union Expert for fish and fishery products, and as expert for Codex Alimentarius. From 2016 to 2021 he led the Greenpeace Ocean Campaign in Africa as Senior Oceans Campaign Manager. He has led several international projects for the protection of the oceans, the safeguarding of biodiversity, of food security (from 10min 50), the fight against climate change, against plastic pollution among others. As an advocate for the most vulnerable communities in West Africa, his commitment has helped give a voice to the voiceless, and hope for a better tomorrow for thousands of Africans.
