HOT and YouthMappers Collaborate to Develop HOT University Clubs

The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) and YouthMappers share a common vision around engaging young people interested in the use of spatial data for humanitarian response and development. YouthMappers and HOT have already collaborated in many ways, including through use of HOT’s Tasking Manager, which is the platform used for collaborating in groups around mapping projects.

Starting in 2016, HOT and YouthMappers will leverage our combined strengths to grow the number of affiliate universities in the YouthMappers network and develop cross-pollination activities.  YouthMappers chapters will have the opportunity to earn a HOT University Club designation, which demonstrates a commitment to supporting HOT projects and provides additional benefits to the club. HOT Clubs also emphasize a fundraising component.

Designation of YouthMappers Chapters with the recognition of being a HOT University Club opens opportunities for the student group to engage directly with HOT leadership, receive additional support from HOT staff and volunteers,, gain visibility in HOT communications, and receive HOT-branded swag for members.

To earn the HOT University Club designation, the chapter should be an active member group of YouthMappers, promote a particular focus on open mapping for humanitarian priorities conducted through HOT, participate regularly in one or more HOT working groups, and contribute to HOT annual fundraising goals.  YouthMappers chapters may apply at any time once the formal call for applications has been put into place.

Student groups can affiliate their group now with the YouthMappers network at http://www.youthmappers.org/ and should be on the lookout for future communications on how to apply for the HOT University Club designation.

The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) applies the principles of open source and open data sharing for humanitarian response and economic development. Free, up-to-date maps are a critical resource when relief organizations are responding to disasters or political crises. The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) creates and provides those maps. www.hotosm.org

The YouthMappers network of university student chapters organizes a global community of learners and scholars to work locally and exchange collaboratively to help create resilient communities by contributing and using open spatial data to address specific locally defined development objectives in unmapped places of the world where USAID works to end extreme poverty.  Thus far, twenty-six universities in eleven countries have joined the network, which was inaugurated in early 2016. www.youthmappers.org
